The Umbilical Chord – Once the umbilical chord falls off, it’s important to clean your baby’s navel area to prevent infection. This can be done by gently applying some antiseptic powder.
Care of the Head – Use a mild baby shampoo to gently clean the hair and head of your baby but be very careful as the top of the head is still not fully developed.
Burns and Rashes – The sun’s ultra-violet rays are damaging to the skin. Prevent sunburn and skin rashes by keeping your baby out of the direct sunlight.
Nappies – All babies require nappies but it’s important that these are changed regularly throughout the day to prevent itchiness, skin infections and rashes. Once you’ve found a disposable nappy that your baby’s comfortable with, stick to that particular brand. Or why not use fabric nappies (like your mom used to) – they’re so much more environment-friendly!
Vaccines – Vaccines are very important and many serious diseases can be prevented by the proper immunization of your baby. Consult your doctor about the vaccinations your baby requires.
Using Pacifiers – Even after breastfeeding, babies are prone to sucking and it’s quite natural to let them suck on a pacifier. However, always make sure that the nipples are sterilized and bacteria-free. Some babies are hesitant to use a pacifier and instead suck their thumbs and there’s nothing wrong with this.
A few thoughts...
- Love your baby unconditionally
- Small babies can not be spoiled, they need loads of love and attention
- Sleep when your baby sleeps, that way you will have the energy to keep going when he/she is awake
- Always look your baby in the eye when communicating with them
- Babies want to be disciplined - yes is yes and no is no
- Do not stress
